CHAPTER 12
December 28th 1904 -9pm, Free Paris, France
It was raining lightly; the electric lights strung along the barbed wire topped barricades were throwing diamond sharp points of white onto the rain-soaked windows of the buildings on the street. Lee pulled his collar up against the rain and walked down the cobbled street until his path was blocked by the wall of a low terrace. Thirty feet below was a stone wall ten feet thick and twenty feet high, topped with rows of barbed wire standing against the eastern bank of the Seine River. A flag mounted to a mast on the barricade was moving gently in the breeze. It was the flag of the German - Confederate Alliance. The designer had merged the symbols of the two countries together, adding the black eagle symbol of the Kaiser and placing it in the center of the Confederate Starry Cross. To Lee, it looked strange and foreign.
Lee could hear the sentries walking their guard route below and there was a brief exchange in guttural German as the sentries chatted as they passed the time.
Using a pair of opera glasses, he scanned the British fortifications across the river. The enemy had been particularly exuberant with their construction and their new barricade structure was at least twice the height of the German-French defenses on the eastern bank. From his vantage point, he could see two enemy machine gun emplacements and three howitzer positions. On either side of Lee, there were the newly installed Confederate rocket batteries.
Swinging his binoculars across the river Lee could just make out the buoys that were anchored down an invisible boundary line down the center of the Seine. Each one was topped with a kerosene lamp that was lit every night by a team of neutral Venetian gondoliers that had been contracted the work. Even the invisible boundary down the river was marked out and the British and German patrol boats passed each other in silent hatred, each keeping strictly to their half of the river.
From high above he heard a low humming engine sound that heralded the passing of an airship and raising his head he thought he could just see one of the new three-man Confederate Zeppelins patrolling the air above the city. This was a technology the British had not secured and the Confederate-Germanic alliance ruled the sky. The rapid development of the new air weapons had been a major factor in the European war. The armored Zeppelin squadrons had been used extensively to bomb British positions and had caused high casualties with the use of high explosive shrapnel bombs. The new battery-powered electric engines developed by the Confederacy and recently deployed in the airships were a vast improvement in both power and safety. No longer were the potential fire hazards of the old gas-powered engines a problem for the Confederate air force.
Lee moved south along the ramparts, in an alcove to his right he could hear grunts and recognized the sounds of a couple fucking in the shadows.
